Know these Funding Resources for Your Internship Abroad

There is no denying that an internship abroad offers you a great opportunity to explore a different culture and makes for a great springboard for your future career. The unfortunate thing, however, is that not a lot of people can afford the expenses of living and interning abroad. To make this once in a life-time opportunity of discovering the world and building one’s career available to almost anyone in need, there are plenty of grants and scholarships catering to help you get an internship abroad.

The Education Abroad Knowledge Community’s (EA KC) Subcommittee on Work, Internships, Volunteer and Research Abroad (WIVRA) compiled a list of scholarships and awards for students seeking experiential learning programs abroad. Make sure to check out the list to see available aids to your study abroad program.

1. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship internship in vietnam

This scholarship is meant for:

U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means wanting to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.

Who is eligible?

Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of his/her study abroad program or internship.

About Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship:

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

2. Boren Awards, STEM Initiative

This scholarship is meant for:

U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East

Who is eligible?

The Boren Scholarship offers a special initiative for undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. Some students focus on language study, while also incorporating a STEM-related internship to their overseas plan. As a reminder, all internships should be academic in nature, unpaid, and with a non-governmental organization.

About Boren Scholarships:

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad. The Boren Scholarships offer a special initiative for undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. The scholarships fund up to $8,000 for summer study (minimum of 8 weeks) for students majoring in the STEM fields. All other applicants must plan to study overseas for at least a semester. STEM field majors are also encouraged to apply for semester and year programs.

3. DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service

This scholarship is meant for:

Participation in summer internships or senior thesis research at German universities

Who is eligible:

Postdoctoral researchers

Doctoral candidates

Graduates

Faculty

Subjects Available:

Mathematics/Natural Sciences

Engineering

About DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service:

This programme is implemented by the ‘German Aerospace Center’ (DLR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). DLR is Germany´s national research center for aeronautics and space. Funding for participation in summer internships or senior thesis research at German universities.  Long term scholarship are available for semester or year study abroad.

4. Diversity Abroad: Network Summer Scholarship

Who is eligible?

Full-time undergraduate (both community college and university level) students attending a member institution.

The Diversity Abroad Network “Diversity Network” will offer summer scholarships in the amount of $1,000 for full-time undergraduate (both community college and university level) students attending a member institution.

5. Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Program

This scholarship is meant for:

The goal of the Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador program is to provide students going abroad with the unique opportunity to be a Diversity Abroad representative during their overseas experience. Overseas Ambassadors are leaders that will explore the issues affecting diverse students abroad, and introduce the DiversityAbroad.com community with a firsthand account of what being abroad is all about.

Who is eligible?

Current students or recent graduates who are planning to study, intern, volunteer or teach abroad.

Overseas Ambassadors earn a stipend in return for representing Diversity Abroad, writing articles, and sharing experiences while abroad. Geared toward economically disadvantaged students, first-generation, students with disabilities and ethnically and racially diverse students.

About the Overseas Ambassador Program:

The Overseas Ambassador Program is a initiative created for currently students or recent graduates who are planning to study, intern, volunteer or teach abroad. The Overseas Ambassadors will serve as an overseas correspondent, sharing their experiences to motivate other members of the DiversityAbroad.com community to go abroad. By writing insightful articles, sharing inspiring videos and pictures about your new surroundings, cross-cultural observations and personal growth, your words will inspire other diverse students to go abroad and challenge them to rethink how study abroad experiences can be for everyone.

6. FACC-Michigan French Business Scholarship: Le Detroit Award

This scholarship is meant for:

Le Detroit Award is to assist college and university students in Michigan who study business or business related courses and French language studies and who plan to combine French and business in their future career plans. 

The FACC Michigan Chapter believes that college and university students in business studies and French language studies provide the foundation for the future growth of French-American business relations.

Who is eligible?

The FACC, Michigan Chapter awards scholarships to students who meet all of the following criteria: 

  • Are enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree at a college or university located in Michigan.
  • Study business or business related courses and French language studies;
  • Have decided to study or complete an internship in France and can submit proof of acceptance into the program by the time the award is to be disbursed;
  • Demonstrate academic excellence; 
  • Demonstrate financial need. 

7. Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program:

The program is meant for:

This program sends young Biomedical Engineers, anywhere outside the U.S. or Canada for one or more of the following activities:

  • Conducting academic or scientific research in a university or laboratory or
  • Pursuing coursework at an academic institution or
  • Interning at a policy institute, or in an industrial or  non-profit setting
  • Other options are possible

Who is eligible?

Whitaker Fellows (pre-doctoral) must meet the basic eligibility requirements and must

  • hold a Bachelor’s degree by the beginning date of the grant or
  • Be in or have recently completed a Master’s degree or
  • Be in a PhD program or
  • Be currently employed, with the most recent degree no higher than an MS
