US STUDY ABROAD CONFERENCE WITH VIETNAMESE INSTITUTIONS

October 12th 2016 at Vietnam National University, Hanoi

The “US Study Abroad Conference with Vietnamese Institutions” was successfully held on Wednesday October 12th 2016 at Vietnam National University, Hanoi by Student Exchange Vietnam and the U.S Embassy in Hanoi. The conference was marked by the presence of Mrs. Susan Sutton – Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S Embassy and Consulate in Vietnam, Mrs. Tanaka Mizuki – Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam and more than 150 delegates who are educational leaders, experienced scholars and experts in international education from local Vietnamese institutions and their counterparts in the US.

The conference was a forum for participating institutions from both Vietnam and the U.S to share their experience in developing and implementing exchange programs for U.S students in Vietnam and to discuss possible actions which are to address current challenges in boosting the number of U.S students taking exchange programs in Vietnam.

Almost 20 presentations from Vietnamese and U.S delegates were sent to the conference organizers. In general, the presentations mainly covered the following topics: First, clarifying the trends, challenges and selection criteria of U.S students for international exchange programs. Second, important issues that Vietnamese institutions must be aware of when hosting U.S students in particular and international students in general on campus, including the challenges which need to be addressed and preparation process. Third, affirming the roles and benefits that exchange programs can bring to Vietnamese and international exchange students. Last, the lessons learnt and experience from successful programs in the past, divided in three main categories: group study program, exchange semester and academic internship.

The conference  was one of the very first cooperative activities in the education sector between the U.S Embassy in Hanoi and Student Exchange Vietnam to boost the number of U.S and Vietnamese students participating in exchange program to each other’s country, starting with increasing the number of U.S students joining exchange programs in Vietnam.
