1. How far is it from Da Nang to Hoi An
Da Nang to Hoi An distance is only about 30 kilometers or 18 miles so if you are already in Da Nang, don’t hesitate to go to Hoi An, our most-voted tourist city in Vietnam for a few days. Each vehicle will travel on one of the following 4 routes:
- Route 1: Drive along Truong Sa Street to Vo Nguyen Giap / Lac Long Quan, then turn right to get to Hoi An City.
- Route 2: Take Vo Chi Cong Street, cross Lac Long Quan/Vo Nguyen Giap, and turn right to Hoi An City.
- Route 3: Drive south along National Highway 1A for about 27 kilometers to Vinh Dien Street, then turn left and enter Hoi An City along Huynh Thuc Khang Street.

One of the most important things to consider when choosing transportation is how to get to Da Nang.
As you will see, the Hoi An shuttle buses depart from Da Nang Airport and Da Nang City. Iff you travel to Da Nang by airlines, you easily can take a shuttle bus to get to Hoi An.
If you come to Da Nang by train or bus, note that the Da Nang train station and the bus station are both located in Da Nang city. The station is conveniently located near the city center, but the main bus station is behind the airport, about 5 km from the center.
Likewise, if you plan to spend a night or two in Da Nang before continuing to Hoi An, you’ll need a shuttle service that departs from town or offers a hotel pick-up service.

1. By Private Car
Car rental: You can ask the hotel you are staying in or the hotel you booked in Hoi An to find a car rental service for you. Depending on your group and budget, you can choose to hire a 4-seater, 7-seater car, or a minivan 16-seater.
These days, many travel and transport companies provide door-to-door private car transfers from Danang to Hoi An and you can search on Google to choose one of them. Please remember to read the reviews on TripAdvisor to make sure you choose the right one.
For reference, you can choose Hoi An Private Car, Hoi An Private Taxi, Culture Pham Travel, or Hoian Locals Travel, etc. These are the trusted local travel companies that provide private car service with English-speaking drivers.
Time: A private car can take you from Da Nang to Hoi An in just 35 minutes or a maximum of 1 hour. Just tell the driver the address of your hotel and they’ll be sure to find it right away,
Fee: VND 350,000 VND 400,000 ($15.00-$20.00)
Pros and Cons: A private car is the first choice from Da Nang to Hoi An because it is comfortable, convenient, and quick. Plus, you customize the itinerary to visit beautiful attractions along the way such as My Khe Beach, Han Market Danang, Marble Mountain, Cham Sculpture Museum, Linh Ung Pagoda, etc.
While this is the most expensive option, it is worth renting a private car to share the cost with others.
2. GrabBike or GrabCar
Book a vehicle: You just download the Grab app to your phone and book a motorbike or car. They will locate your current location and all you need to choose the destination and means of transport (Bike or Car). They will let you know the total price in advance so you can decide to book or not.
Time: Just like a private car, GrabCar will take you to Hoi An in about 50 minutes. You can ride the motorbike for a longer time, approximately 1 hour plus.
Fee:
- 150,000 VND (6,3 USD) for a GrabBike
- 350,000 VND (15 USD) for a GrabCar
Pros and Cons: For those who travel alone with a backpack, choosing a motorcycle taxi (GrabBike) is extremely cheap and convenient. Also, if you download the Grab or Bee app for the first time, there will be a lot of promo codes for you to use. However, these riders – especially motorcyclists – can sometimes go very fast, so you may need to bring your helmet as they usually only provide poor-quality helmets for their guests.
3. Taxi
Book a car: If you don’t know how to use the app, you can call a traditional taxi. Taxis can be found everywhere in Da Nang City or Da Nang International Airport, the two most popular companies you should call are: Mai Linh Taxi (+84 511 352 5252) and Vinasun Taxi (+84 511 368 6868)
Duration: about 1 hour
Fee: Approx. VND 300,000 – VND 400,000 ($15.00-$20.00).
Pros and Cons: It is very convenient to catch a taxi because they are everywhere and you can travel with your large luggage. But normally, the traditional taxi is the the meter taxi, so you must deal the price with them first, if not, you will easily get a scam as the taxi driver will go around the city to get more money from you.
4. Public bus
Ticket booking: You can take bus No. 1 directly from Da Nang and Hoi An, and vice versa. Buses run every 20 minutes, daily from 5:30 am to 6 pm.
Time: about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Fee: This is the cheapest way to travel from Da Nang to Hoi An and it costs VND 25,000/ pax (US$1). You can get on the bus first and buy your ticket later on the bus from the bus driver. The local buses in Vietnam do not offer online tickets, you just stand at the bus stop and catch the bus to Hoi An.
Tip: Prices are usually printed on the windows of the buses, so be sure to pay the correct price.
Pros and Cons: This is the cheapest way to get from Da Nang to Hoi An if you have a lot of time and a very small budget. However, you won’t have much space to store your stuff, as there can be a lot of people on the bus (but on lucky days, there might be few). Another downside of taking the public bus is that the bus station is about 2 miles from the airport, so you’ll have to take a taxi to get there anyway.
5. Motorcycle
Rent a bike: You can easily rent a motorbike in Da Nang. The 2 scooter rental services you can book with confidence are:

Time: about 2 hours
Fee: about 150,000 VND/day, discounts are available for long-term rentals.
Pros and Cons: Traveling by motorbike is the best way to fully experience the beautiful coast from Da Nang to Hoi An, and it’s also convenient because you can move freely. However, renting a motorcycle requires a deposit and an ID card as a guarantee, so prepare a notarized passport in advance. Also, traffic in Vietnam may not be the same as traffic in your country. This can be dangerous, so don’t try it if you are not an experienced driver.
5. Transportation Da Nang- Hoi An Q&A
How much does it cost to get from Da Nang to Hoi An?
It costs 80 cents to 26 dollars to get from Da Nang to Hoi An. The cheapest option is a public bus for only 18,000 VND or 80 US cents. A taxi to Hoi An costs $16, while a private VIP minibus shuttle costs $26.
How is the road from Da Nang to Hoi An?
The road between Da Nang and Hoi An is quite flat. Because it hugs the shore, it’s flat and relatively straight all the way. If you suffer from motion sickness, I still recommend that you take your usual medication with you. But you shouldn’t have any major problems.
Road safety is always a concern in Vietnam, especially on busy highways like this. I highly recommend choosing a reputable transport company with a good safety record and professional drivers (read on for my recommendations).
Avoid traveling after dark and don’t forget to fasten your seatbelt.
Pro tip: Pick a seat to the right of the bus or car so you don’t have to see oncoming traffic.
Where to stop between Da Nang and Hoi An?
The scenery between Da Nang and Hoi An is quite beautiful, especially when you choose the coastal route and can look out the right window towards the East Sea of Vietnam. Leaving Da Nang, the journey begins by crossing one of the magnificent bridges of Danang.
There aren’t many places you want to stop along the way, other than the Marble Mountains, a limestone block with caves and temples just outside Da Nang.
If you are traveling by Da Nang airport shuttle or bus, you won’t be able to stop for sightseeing or taking photos. There may be a stop in the middle, but only for about 10 minutes.
If you take a taxi or private car, you can ask the drivers to stop at places along the way to admire the views, capture photos (and/or food, use the restrooms, and whatever else you need!).
If you take an organized tour from Da Nang to Hoi An, you will have a chance to visit the highlight attractions with your tour guide.
Is there a direct train between Da Nang and Hoi An?
No, there is no train service between Hoi An and Da Nang.
The nearest train station to Hoi An is in Da Nang, so if you’re coming from elsewhere in Vietnam on the Thong Nhat Express, you’ll need to switch to one of the above land options to get to Hoi An (that’s exactly what I did on my first trip to Vietnam).
Should I tip my taxi driver?
Tipping is an important part of the travel culture in Vietnam. Although it is not mandatory, it is increasingly expected, especially by foreign tourists.
If you travel from Da Nang to Hoi An by private car, taxi, or as part of a guided tour, you will normally leave the driver and/or guide a tip as long as you are happy with the service.
There is no need to tip for buses, shuttles, or when using Grab (although Grab drivers will appreciate it if you round the fare to the nearest 10,000).
